When Colson was about 7 months old, I tried the cry-it-out (CIO) method, but could only bear to listen for about 5 minutes. This time, I think I was mentally more prepared and knew that it we needed to work through this.
So the first night, we had 20 minutes of continuous crying, followed by 20 minutes of alternating crying and laying his head down. After that, he woke up once, and cried for about 10 minutes, then went back to sleep. Second night we were down to about 15 minutes of crying, and on the third night it was less than 5 minutes! I had read so many articles about CIO, and sleep training and Ferber-type methods that all said that by the third to fifth night, every baby should be able to put themselves to sleep, but I had no idea that it would work so quickly.
Well, just a few days after our sleep training began, we went to visit my parents. So whenever we are down there, Colson and I always share the same bed, so he started waking again. Once we got home, we kind of had to re-train him.
But now, its been a couple solid weeks of good sleep. He will sleep about a ten hour stretch, then wake to nurse and sleep two more hours. Happy baby and happy mom!!
